I write articles on desktop computers related to maintaining, upgrading, and repairing a desktop computer. I also writ articles on tablets.

Tips for improving Windows 7 Vista overall system performance on your computer or laptop

Keep Windows 7 or older versions of Windows computer to run faster without much technical knowledge or spending much time by just changing a few settings in Windows.

Windows 7 is one of the best operating systems to run on a modern computer because of its fast start up times, memory caching features, and ease of use.

Most, or all of these tips can also be used in Windows Vista since 7 is like a faster version of Vista with a few improvements when it comes to speed and reliability.

Even if your computer is already fast, this lens would teach you how to squeeze out the last bit of performance out of your computer's hardware, so it would not be slow in the future, or be even faster then you can ever imagine!

However, on a slower low-end computer running Windows 7 can be slow if you only have a 1GHz CPU, 1-2 GB of RAM, and very little free hard drive space which makes using Windows 7 a pain because you have to wait extra long for Windows 7 to start up, and programs are slow.

I would teach you how to easily make your Windows 7 based computer faster by stopping start-up programs, uninstalling programs, changing your visual effects, using Windows 7 readyboost, switching power plans, doing regular maintenance on your operating system, turning off scheduled tasks, upgrading hardware, and maintaining your PC speed.

After following this guide, your computer should start up faster, run programs faster, multi-tasks more effieciently, and have more available free computer resources like RAM, CPU cycles, and hard drive space for gaming, office work, movies, faster virus scans, etc on your computer or laptop running Windows.

Advanced SystemCare Pro Optimizes Windows quickly and Easily - Advance SystemCare by Iobit is a great progrem for Windows users who want to quickly and easily f

I have been using Advance System Care for years, and it works great at removing un-needed junk registry keys, defraging my hard drive, doing disk cleanup, checking for problems and other task to speed up my computer with a few clicks or less in Windows 7 with Advance System Care.

Advance System Care also has a Turbo mode to make your computer faster by turning off programs which you don't need, but are running in the background.

How will optimizing your PC make it faster?
How will optimizing your PC make it faster?

How can optimizing your computer's performance improve your computer experience?

A faster optimize computer is more stable, runs programs faster, and saves you time.

Optimizing your home computer to be the fastest it can be can make Windows 7 and Windows' programs run a lot more stable. You will experience fewer crashes causes or freezes cause by poor system performance in Windows 7.

Your programs and Windows would start-up faster, save files faster, and your video performance for games and movies would be less choppy and slow since your PC would struggle less trying to open system intensive files and programs like PC games, video editors, and Photo editing software.

A faster computer makes you more productive on your computer since your computer can now save files quicker, and run multiple programs at once without any noticeable slowdown which decreases your computers speed while wasting you time when your PC is slow.

MsConfig System Configuration
MsConfig System Configuration

Turning off start up Programs and services in Windows 7 to start your computer faster.

Having less things start up during Windows start up will make your computer boot up faster.

When fewer programs start up during Windows start up, your computer will have fewer programs to open during Windows start up. By having fewer programs to start during Windows start up, it means your computer can spend more time starting up Windows rather then your instant Messaging software, media players, office suites, and 3rd party search programs.

All you have to do is type "msconfig" in the Windows 7 startmenu to begin the system configuration program which you can use to manage your computer start up programs in the startup tab. It is usually safe to uncheck most of the programs except avoid unchecking your Anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-malware and firewall software if you have any startup options for your security software in the startup tab. Msconfig is one of the most effectivebuilt-in Windows programs you can use to speed up your Windows computer startup and overall Windows performance.

In the boot tab, you can check the "No GUI boot" check box to disable the Windows animation during start up which should save a few seconds from your startup time.

You can click the "advanced option button" in the boot tab to make your computer use all your CPU in your computer to use to boot your computer, and you can also set Windows to use all your usable memory to boot into Windows to tweak your boot settings to make Windows boot even faster by a few seconds.

Preferably, it is best to open the program which you don't want to start up during startup, and go into the settings to see if there is an option for you to disable startup for the program during Windows boot since it is more permanent then using Msconfig. It would also get rid of the startup entry in Msconfig, so there is nothing to uncheck, and your unwanted startup program would not start up again during startup.

In Msconfig, you can also uncheck services which you do not need, but you should search online to see if you can disable them, or you might lose internet connection, or other Windows features.

You can also check the "Hide all Microsoft Services" to make sure you don't accidentally uncheck a Microsoft service. Make sure you don't uncheck services related to your Firewall, antivirus, or computer security software.

You can also use Services.msc to edit your services which startup during Windows. All you have to do is type Services.msc into the Windows 7 startmenu textbox, and press enter.

Right click the service which you want to disable, and pick properties. Read the description to see if you need it. Then set the startup type to Disabled, and click ok. If you are not sure if you need or do not need the service, it is best to leave it a lone.

Also it is best to keep track of which services you disabled, so if you lose your internet connection, or sound, you can re-enable it to get back sound.

If you forgot which services you enabled or disabled, then you can do a system restore to an earlier date before you change settings for your services in Windows 7.

Black Viper has a great guide on Windows 7 Service configuration which you can follow at www.blackviper.com/2010/12/17/black-vipers-windows-7-service-pack-1-service-configurations/

Add Remove Programs
Add Remove Programs

Uninstalling Software in Windows 7 to make it less bloated and faster

Removing software from Windows 7 will make it run smoother, and have more free space on the hard drive.

Sometimes when you install programs in Windows, the program also install extra programs in Windows called services. These services can make Windows use more RAM, CPU, and other system resources even if you are not running the program which is related to the service. Some services always run on your computer automatically when you start up Windows.

To start the Windows 7 program uninstaller, type "add or remove programs" in the startmenu search box, and click enter. Click on the softwares you want to uninstall from the list, and follow the wizard for uninstalling the software.

There is also a link on the left sidebar of Windows 7 add or remove program called "Turn Windows features on or off" which you can use to turn off windows features. I recommending unchecking "Indexing services" if you do not use Windows search much. You do not have to worry if you accidentally turned something off since you can always turn it back on by rechecking it later.

You can also uninstall your desktop gadgets which you do not want anymore by right clicking your Desktop with your mouse, and picking gadgets. Right click on the gadget you do not want anymore and click the uninstall button on the right click menu.

Classic theme
Classic theme

Switching to a more basic desktop theme for Windows 7 to improve performance

Learn how to easily turn off desktop animation and use the classic theme in Windows 7 to speed up Windows 7 system performance!

Windows 7 Aeroglass theme and animation is nice looking, but they both can make Windows 7 run slower on a computer with very little RAM and have a slow video card.

To turn off Windows 7 Aeroglass theme, type "advance system settings" in the Windows 7 startmenu, and press enter. There is a heading called performance which you can click the settings button on the right. Click the circular button which says "Adjust for best performance", and click OK. Now Windows 7 should be using the standard classic theme, and all the desktop animations in Windows 7 should be off.

You can also right click your desktop and click personalize where you can change your background, and sound settings for your theme. Using a solid color for your background can save some RAM. You can also turn off cleartype by typing cleartype in your start menu then press enter, and uncheck the "turn on clear type" check box.

When playing games, you can turn down the color depth to 16bit and lower the resolution of your monitor, and change the ingame setings for quality to low or medium instead of high for faster performance. Also, make sure your video card driver is up to date.

ReadyBoost
ReadyBoost

Using Windows 7 Readyboost to boost the performance of Windows 7's speed

Readyboost saves/cache files to a fast USB Flash drive or Memory card for faster reads and writes for better file and program opening performance.

Caching files off a USB Flash Drive is a lot faster then caching files off of a hard drive, so if you have a fast USB flash drive or SD or other type of memory card, you can use it for Windows 7 Readyboost to speed up the performance of your home computer which runs Windows 7.

All you have to plug in a fast USB flash drive or SD memory card, and Windows 7 would ask you if you want to use your drive or memory card as a readyboost device. You can also go to the Computer section in Windows Explorer, and right click on your USB Flash drive, and pick properties where you find a Readyboost tab which you can use to tell you how much space you want to use for Windows Readyboost, or if you want to dedicate your entire USB flash drive or memory card for use with Readyboost. When you are done press the OK button.

High Performance Power Plan
High Performance Power Plan

Switching to the High performance power plan in Windows 7 for extra speed.

Changing your power usage setting plan for increase performance.

In Windows 7, there is a power plan setting called "High Performance plan" which adjusts Windows to use more of your CPU, and other system resources for faster performance.

All you have to do is type "power plans" in the Windows 7 startmenu search box, and click enter. Next, you click on the High Performance circular box, and you are done. you can also click on the link which says "Change plan settings" which you can change the settings for computer to sleep, and turn off display settings. There is also a link called "change advance power settings" which lets you easily adjust the power settings even more according to your needs.

If you a laptop, you may experience increase performance by plugging your laptop into the wall's power plug since many laptops are designed to slow down when not plugged into a power outlet to save battery power. But, when you are plugged into a power outlet, your laptop won't throttle down.

Computer Maintenance
Computer Maintenance

Doing regular maintenance on Windows 7 to maintain the speed of Windows

It is best to regularly do a disk clean up, disk error check, disk defrag, and antivirus scans.

Windows 7 require regular maintenance for it to run well. I recommend doing a disk cleanup to get rid of temporary junk system files. You can use the standard disk cleanup software, or third party software like Piriforms CCleaner, BleachBit, Glary Utilities, Temporary File Cleaner by old timer.

After you do a disk cleanup, you can do a disk error check by starting Windows Explorer then going to the Computer section, and right clicking the drive you want to check for errors, and pick properties. Go to the Tools Tab, and click on the check now. If you are checking the system drive which is C:\ you may need to restart your computer.

Now that you did a disk cleanup, and error check, it is time to do a disk defrag. You can use the disk defrag program built into Windows by typing disk defrag in the Windows 7 startmenu search, and pressing on the defrag option.

It is also important to have at least 20% free space on your hard drive for Windows to defrag your hard drive properly, and run well.

Make sure you do not compress your hard drive in Windows since Compress hard drives run a little slower then non-compress hard drive because on a compress file, folder, or drive, Windows need to uncompress it to open it which takes time and processing power.

It is also important to regularly scan your computer for viruses, spyware, and malware with your antivirus, antispyware, and antimalware software to make sure there is no malicious software which is slowing down your home PC while stealing your passwords, and login information for websites you login to.

Task Scheduler
Task Scheduler

Disabling Scheduled Tasks in Windows 7 for fewer running programs which slow down Windows

Sometimes there are tons of programs in Windows Task Scheduler which make Windows run programs at a certain time making your computer slow at that time.

Disabling Schedule Tasks by 3rd party software in Task Scheduler can make Windows never run those task again on a scheduled basis.

All you have to do is, type "Task Scheduler" in Windows 7 Startmenu search box, and click enter. Next click on the Task Scheduled Library which shows a list of scheduled tasks created by third party software which run at specific times.

Right click on the tasks which you do not want to run on a scheduled timetable, and click on the disable option to disable the program from running automatically.

Programs
Programs

Pick software to use which is not heavy/bloated.

Pick anti-virus, word processors, media players, and other software which are not bloated.

In my experience, using software which does not use as much system resources make my computer run faster and crash less.

Avast Antivirus 6 which you can download at www.avast.com is one of the most light weight anti-virus which I ever used for Windows 7, and Avast 6 works well at protecting my computer from virus programs. If you already have an Anti-virus, uninstall it before you install Avast.

MalwareBytes is a fast and lightweight anti-malware which you can use to get rid of virus, malware, and spyware program. Download Malwarebytes at www.malwarebytes.org

OpenOffice is also a great office suite which you can use to write essays, make presentations, and create spreadsheets is a nice light weight, but feature rich Office Suite which is compatible with Windows 7. You can download OpenOffice at www.OpenOffice.org.

FoxIT is a fast PDF reader which you can use to open PDF files quickly. Download FoxIT PDF Reader at www.foxitsoftware.com/products/reader/

Gimp is a nice lightweight image editor which you can download at www.gimp.org

Irfanview is small image viewer and editor program which is very fast. You can download Irfanview at www.irfanview.com

VLC player is a great video player which is compatible with Windows 7. It can play a lot of different video and audio file types, and VLC is incredibly fast. You can download VLC player at www.videolan.org.

Gom Player is also a good media player for Windows 7 which you can download from www.gomlab.com.

Foobar2000 is a great simplistic and lightweight MP3 and audio music player which you can use to play music. You can download Foobar2000 at www.foobar2000.org.

Aora Web browser which is based on Webkit web browser is a lightweight, and fast web browser which you can use for Windows 7. You can download it at code.google.com/p/arora/

Google Chrome is also a fast web browser which you can download from www.google.com/chrome .

Also, I recommend uninstalling unused toolbars, and add-ons which you installed on your web browsers to lighten your browsers memory and CPU system resources.

Pidgin is a great instant messaging which lets you log into ICQ, YIM,AIM, MSN, etc with one program running. You can download Pidgin at www.pidgin.im

7-Zip is a fast file compression program similar to Winzip which can compress files and folders into zip folders. You can download 7-zip at www.7-zip.org .

Doing a clean install of Windows 7 when Windows is messed up beyond repair! - A clean install of Windows 7 should fix most Windows 7 related performance problem

After time, Windows tend to clog up with broken programs, un-needed registry keys, and becomes infected with viruses if your anti-virus is not very good.

By doing a clean install, it gets rid of all the un-needed stuff on Windows, and your computer will be as fast as the day you bought it.

Before you do a clean install, you should back up all your important files like videos, documents, and pictures since they will all be gone after the clean install.

You would need either your recovery discs, or the Windows 7 install disc to do a clean install by starting your computer from the recovery or install disc. A lot of newer computers have a recovery partition for reinstalling Windows 7 by pressing the ESC or other key during computer start up to reinstall Windows 7 on your PC.

After the Clean install or Windows 7 recovery, there should be no problems caused by viruses, startup programs, and other files slowing down your PC.

Be sure to install all the latest Windows Update for Windows 7, and an Anti-Virus program for Windows 7 after the Windows 7 install.

Startmenu and systray

Closing Programs on the StartMenu Toolbar and System Tray, and desktop to gain back free RAM and CPU Cycles for Increase Speed

When you have too many programs running in the background, it can really slow down your Windows 7 computer.

All you have to do is click the X on the top right of the Program or Desktop Gadget (Small programs like clock, Calender, etc on Desktop)to close it. You can also right click the program button on the startmenu toolbar, and pick the "close window" option.

In the system on the bottom right of Windows , you can right click the tiny icons, and pick exit or disable in most cases. If you right click on an empty area of the system tray, you can pick "Change Notification Icons" where you can change the system tray icon settings, and hide the volume, network, power, and Action Center icons by clicking on the "Turn System Icons on or off" on the bottom.

In some cases, you may need to use the Windows Task manager to turn off system tray icon and services. You can right click an empty space in your Startmenu toolbar, and pick Start Task Manager. In Task Manager, you can stop programs by highlighting them, and clicking on End Tasks on the Applications and processes tab. In the Processes tab, you can click on the "Show processes from all users" to stop services and hidden programs. Be careful not to stop any Windows or Computer Security software programs or services since it can make Windows unstable and unsafe.

Changing your computer hardware, and maintaining a PC for increase speed.

Upgrading your RAM, CPU, and hard drive for faster speed. Plus, PC maintenance tips for increase speed.

If you want better performance, upgrading to 3GB or more of RAM will make your computer faster. Also, if your computer only has a 1GHz CPU, I recommend upgrading to a 2 GHz CPU. A solid state hard drive will make your computer a lot faster when starting up, and launching software.

Before upgrading any of your computer parts, make sure your computer's power supply is strong enough to handle the increase system load, and make sure the RAM, hard drive, and video cards you want to buy are compatible with your motherboard.

If you use the 32bit version of Windows 7, 4GB of RAM is the maximum amount of RAM Windows 7 can use. The 64bit version of Windows 7 can use more then 4GB of RAM like 8GB of RAM. However, your CPU also needs to be a 64bit CPU to run a 64bit version of Windows 7. However, 3-4GB of RAM should be good enough for most things. However, if you have a video card with 512MB-1GB of RAM, and you are using a 32bit version of Windows 7, you should only have 3GB of RAM since if you have a video card with a large amount of RAM 1-2GB of RAM on your computer will not be able to use your extra RAM since 32bit OS can only see 4GB of RAM which also include your videocard RAM.

If you are a computer gamer, installing a new video card and sound card, would increase your gaming performance a lot.

It is also important to regularly check if the inside of your computer case is not full of dust since the dust can make your computer full of dust which makes it to become slow, over heat, become unstable, and break sooner. I recommend using a can of compress air which you can buy at most computer electronics store. Canned air is used to blow dust out of your computer case and cleaning it. Compress air can also be used to clean the vents on a laptop and keyboard, so your laptop does not overheat and slow down.

Laptops also tend to throttle down or shutdown when it overheats, so buying a laptop cooling pad which uses USB for powering fans on the bottom of the laptop cooling pad can make your laptop less likely to heat up which can slow down your computer.

The advantages of a Solid State Hard Drive are faster Windows start up time, faster program start up times, no noise, power savings and less heat.

Solid State Drives are the way to go if you want to boot up into Windows 7 in a few seconds vs a few minutes with standard mechanical based hard drives.

Windows 8 tips for speeding it up

Learn how to make Windows 8 faster

Defrag your computer hard drive at least once a month. Windows 8 schedule defrags on a regular basis.

You can also turn off Windows animation which could make Windows faster if you have a slow video card.

Windows Defender is also a pretty fast antivirus for Windows 8, so if you want a fast and easy to use antivirus which does not slow down your computer.

Overclocking your hardware to achieve faster speeds. - Overclocking is when you set your computer hardware speed to be faster.

Overclocking is an activity not for novice computer users to do to make their computer faster, but if you are an advance user who are willing to take a risk of instability or hardware damage, overclocking your CPU, RAM, and Video card can offer a small to medium speed boost to your computer.

There are also RAM, CPU, and video cards designed to be overclocked by its users.

It is best to read a book about overclocking which teaches you the basics of overclocking your computer for maximum performance since overclocking is a very advance computer speed tweak topic. Books on overclocking will teach you the computer cooling, power/electricity requirements, and information you need to reduce the chance of damage to your computer while overclocking.

Before overclocking, make sure your computer's cooling system like fans, heatsinks, and power supply can provide the cooling and power you need to overclock your PC. For more better results from overclocking, you may need to change your computer fans, and switch to a liquid or water cooling system, and buy a more powerful power supply to meet the demands of overclocking a PC.

I also recommending making small changes to your CPU, RAM or video cards speed, and use a CPU and RAM stress test program like en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime95 to test your computer for stability then slowly increasing your speed then testing your CPU and RAM with Prime 95 again. There are some video cards made by Nvidia come with an over clocking utility which lets you find the optimal clock speed for your video card. There are also more expensive videocards which are overclocked by default for improve performance. When picking a video card for overclocking, buy one which has large fans and a high quality heatsink which is preferably made from Copper.

Troubleshooting and repairing a hard drive or hard drive for better speed and reliability

Tips when you did everything to speed up your PC, but it is still slow. It could be the hard drive.

You tried everything to try to make Windows 7 faster like checking for viruses, seeing if your computer is overheating, reinstalling Windows, disabling startup programs, and tweaking Windows for speed. But, Windows is still slow and unstable. If you notice you have a lot of freezes, weird read and write hard drive suddenly, unable to boot into Windows sometimes, and other problems. It could mean your hard drive or hard drive controller is dying which can cause all these problems mentioned above. If you hear weird clicking and grinding sounds, it is a sign your hard drive is going to fail very soon. But, if you do not hear these sounds, most likely your hard drive data cable, or your motherboard controller port is dying. It is also possible your hard drive's circuit board is dying which means you should backup your data and replace your hard drive.

A dying hard drive, motherboard hard drive controller, or broken hard drive cable can make your computer slower, and very unstable in my experience.

Troubleshooting and repairing a computer hard drive is not a beginner task. If you do not know how to fix, or build computers, it is best to hire a computer technician, or ask a friend to help you fix your computer's drive.

If your computer hard drive is dying or your computer motherboard's hard drive controller is broken or dying, it might mean your hard drive or hard drive controller is dying. It can also mean your computer's hard drive cable is broken.

The first thing you should do is replace the hard drive cable to see if it makes your computer more stable, and not as slow.

If replacing the hard drive cable does not work, You can try unplugging your hard drive cable from your motherboard hard drive controller port, and plugging it into another free port if a free port exists to see if the other hard drive controller ports are broken, or works at fixing your hard drive stability and performance problems.

Lastly, you can buy a PCI hard drive controller card for your computer to plug into the PCI expansion port on the motherboard if you have no free ports or all ports on your motherboard don't work.

If all the above steps do not work, most likely it is your hard drive is dying. You should back up your hard drive's data like photos, music, etc right away. Buy a new hard drive, and reinstall Windows on the new hard drive. You usually use your Windows recovery disks, or Windows install CD to reinstall Windows from starting your computer from a the install disc to format, partition, and install Windows.

Optimization Myths to avoid

Tweaks, software, and other tasks which you should avoid when optimizing your PC.

1. You can't download more RAM, CPU speed, or hard drive space by installing a program these software are scams.

2. There are also no programs which can make your internet bandwidth faster since how much bandwidth you have depends on your internet plan you have with your ISP.

3. Registry Cleaners don't make a huge difference in computer performance, and a lot of the poorly made one can make Windows unstable. Be sure to pick a registry cleaner which has a lot of positive reviews online from download.com, blogs, and other sites. CCleaner, Glary Utilities, and Auslogic Registry Defrag makes good registry cleaner which works well in my experience, and have a backup function for deleted keys. Always make a backup of registry keys before you delete keys with registry cleaners, so you can restore the deleted keys if you deleted something useful.

There are also Registry optimization and defrag programs which make the size of your registry smaller. They work at speeding up your computer start up a little bit, but not a lot, so they might not be worth it if your computer is not slow or starts up fast already.

4. Memory Optimizer programs won't make your RAM any faster, and in some cases they seem to make Windows more slow.

5. Startup managers usually don't make your computer faster, and can even make your computer slower if they run in the background when Windows starts. In my experience, MsConfig.exe startup tab is good enough that you do not need a third party startup manager to manage your start up applications. Also, programs which delay start up programs from starting by 10-50 seconds also don't make much of a difference when it comes to start up times. I notice program start-up delayer programs can sometimes make your computer suddenly feel sluggish or make programs not start up at all, or partially which is not good if you rely on your computer to record TV shows from a TV tuner card program which needs to startup automatically when Windows start.
